Papua New Guinea National Board for Disabled Persons (PNGNBDP)
The National Board for Disabled Persons was established in 1979. At that time it was formed to act as a coordinating body to oversee the organisations of disabled persons in PNG that were providing services directly to disabled persons.
The government of PNG recognises the existence of NBDP as a Board/Body responsible for coordinating the activities of the Disabled Persons organisations and acting as a way for service providers to dialogue with the government. In terms of funding, grants were made available by three National Departments namely; Health, Education and Home Affairs and Youth. The funding for disability organisations which are affiliated with the NBDP is channelled through the board.
Among the affiliated organisations are Callan Services, PNG Assembly of Disabled People, Creative Self Help Centre, Cheshire Homes in PNG, St. John’s Association for the Blind and POM Sheltered Workshop.
National DRAC is affiliated with the Board since 2007.
During the NBDP meeting in Port Moresby in October 2008 the members agreed that National DRAC will be the central focal point for disseminating information on disability issues.
The current Chair is Ben Theodore, pictured above with his wife Josie. Mr Theodore was appointed in Sept 2012.
