Inclusive Education
Introduction
Inclusive education is providing quality education for all despite of age, disability, gender, etc . It is based on the right of all learners to a quality education that accommodates their learning needs. It enhances educational opportunities for all children and not just students with special needs.
From the deaf education perspective, sign language is very important for the education of a deaf child in Papua New Guinea today. A deaf child when introduced with sign language at an early learning age and later enrolled in the mainstream school should be taught in sign language including total communication. That means different approaches of teaching and learning must be used in the classroom for the deaf to understand what is being taught. Total Communication includes sign language, body gestures, lip reading, visual aides, miming, etc. It is any form of communication that brings message to a deaf person.
Having a deaf student enrolled either in a special school or in a unit or in a mainstream school, it is important that the sign language should be used. Therefore teachers in the mainstream schools should be trained in sign language and be ready to teach a deaf student.
A school that can provide the following below is an inclusive school:
· learning opportunities for all children including the deaf
· Create accessible learning environment for all
· Encourage equal participation
· Work along with special teachers, parents, specialists ,bod and other stakeholders where necessary.
· Provide learning materials for students & teachers
· Make individual educational plans for special needs students involving parents, special teachers, specialists, etc
· Teachers should be taught sign language and be able to use them when teaching a deaf child.
· Have a school inclusive education policy in place for the bod, parents & teachers to ensure that the policy is effectively implemented by all stake holders.
Successful inclusion depends upon the careful and planned allocation of existing human and material resources. We can support the development of inclusive education in many ways such as promoting positive attitudes, promoting inclusive learning environments, promoting early intervention and supporting appropriate policy development.
